But when is the right time?
Well, that time is now…
Unless you’re in the rare position of having a job you truly love and don’t want to leave, or maybe you do love it, but there is just a niggling, chances are there’s something you want to change. And if you’re not sure what that might be yet, it could be that right now is the perfect time to start finding out. How? By hanging on to what feels right and letting go of what doesn’t. Use your intuition as your guide — it will help you find the small steps forward day-to-day and then ultimately lead you in the direction of your dreams.
We have wanted to do this so badly for ages but have lacked the confidence.
In the words of the great Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Do the thing you fear to do and keep on doing it… that is the quickest and surest way ever yet discovered to conquer fear.”
The biggest thing preventing us from making our leap of faith has been a fear of failure (and a fear of success). So many other negative thoughts have clouded our minds over the years, including:
What if we don’t like it?
What will people think?
Will we be able to make enough money?
What if no one is interested?
Be you! There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story and your voice is what’ separates you from the rest. Should you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a sign you still have more work to do.
The Yin to your Yang
In business, like in marriage, it's important to find that person who is your yin to your yang. My yang is my business partner Gillian—she's a walking encyclopedia of facts and figures, a strong problem solver who can see the bigger picture when I'm too busy focusing on the details. She makes me think outside the box and pushes me to take risks I'd otherwise shy away from.
How does this relate to those of you thinking about starting a business? Use your experiences with colleagues and friends to guide you in choosing the right person for a collaboration or partnership. Businesses are more likely to succeed by having an understanding that comes from working closely with someone over time (like it did with Gillian and me!). You'll know how they work, what they need from you, and when they need it. So if you're considering taking on a partner or collaborator for your new business venture, look for that special someone whose skills complement yours. If something doesn't feel right about them being there in the beginning (there was never any question with us), then trust your gut instinct—it's usually right!
Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
Take the risk
How many times have we seen a person approach a new endeavour with great excitement and high hopes only to give up after getting burned, frustrated and even down-in-the-dumps because of all the challenges that come with it? You see this happen in all different areas of life: relationship, career, hobbies, socialising. We are no exception. When we started thinking about our journey, we turned up our noses at the thought of taking risks. What if we failed? What if our ideas did not work out as well as we thought they would? Failure is part of life and if you don’t fail then you most probably haven’t tried anything new! It also doesn’t mean that you should be changing your career path every year, just because it didn’t work out great the first time around. It is more about trying something new and not feeling guilty about leaving behind what was once your ‘dream job’!
I don't thing we have ever prepared for something so well, and it felt natural, easy, not a chore, now if you get that feeling, it's telling you something.
The leap of faith
So when is that right time?
When should you take that leap of faith and jump in with both feet?
What are the pros and cons of doing so?
How do you know when the time is right to make that jump?
Well, after much self-reflection and being honest about my situation, I realized it was time for me to take that leap of faith. It was time for me to finally do what I had been wanting to do for a very long time now. It was time for me to start living life on my own terms, not on someone else’s. It was time for me to stop worrying about what others would think or say if I did this or did that. It was just simply "time". Thankfully, Gillian felt the same and the journey began.
Supportive community
What do you think? We know that its people who make any business a success, there needs to be a supportive community of people who understand what you are trying to achieve. “We need to hire the right people, have a unified vision that is shared by all and be able to communicate and collaborate effectively. We need to work as a team, not as individuals”
We want to work with like-minded people who share our vision, we want to create a family around our business. It’s important to us that we build a tribe! We have already started working with some amazing people who share in our vision and see the benefits of creating new ways of living and working.
You are never too old (or young) to try something new or different.
Have you ever looked at your life, swiped left on it, and decided to try something else? You're not alone. In fact, people have done this since the beginning of time— but it still feels like, you are the first to ever do this! and there are always people around you who are a little more safe, secure, but we only live once...
"To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people just exist"
Oscar Wilde
